Hi, my name is Jeff Davies I was in the Knights from 1978 to 1980. I am now living in Tynewydd, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
I remember one time I had just got an RD400, My mates and I went in the Knights to get a pint and when I came out a girl asked me if the bike was mine, I said yes, then then said she'd never been on one before so off we went for an hour or so. Bloody marvellous it was as well. Another time my me and my mates got so drunk we could not ride home so we went to the dunes, dropped the damn things over and over until we finally found a place flat enough to put the bikes on their stands *with the flattened coke can we carried under our seats). We slept next to them to get some warmth from the engines before the drunken stupor took us.

I loved it there, I have some pictures somewhere (at least I used to have) of the inside, the exploding asteroid on the ceiling, the picture of a fluffy white cat on the ladies toilet door. We used to sit outside, bikers all, wheelieing everywhere, drinking and riding, christ it was fun. Remember the badges we could buy with things like: 'We All Went To The Knights Arms And Lived Happily Ever After' or 'Welsh Mushrooms Are Magic'. Those were indeed the days.

Hi, my name is Ken I was in the Knights from 1973 to 1981. I am now living in porthcawl, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
Dear friends of the knights, those of you who came to the Seabank for the knights arms reunion last October, had a real good time despite the place being too small and having to wait ages for a drink! So, as requested by you, weve managed with the help of the Grand Pavilion (celebrating their 75th anniversary)and surf cult 07 ( 10 day surfing festival - check out www.surf-cult.co.uk)to book the Grand Pavilion on Friday 7th September, 2007. Tickets are only £5, available at Grand Pavilion box office - tel. 01656 815995. This years proceeds will be going to Porthcawl lifeguard club who recently lost their station to a fire. The council is rebuilding but they desperatly need equipment. Music this year will be from DJ Robbie Owen and live music from local bands such as Buzzards, Secret Army and Sex. The down stairs bar will be holding acustic sessions from Roger Clatworthy, Carl Newman, Ezra and Blister.Food will also be avialable this year from the Pavilion caterers. I can see this reuinion party is going to be a good one, so dont leave it too long to get your tickets, remember how quickly they sold out last year! Finally a message to Dai Parks and Jonny Perneou - "No, we are not booking the Shaking Stevens tribute band, are you taking the piss or what?!" Love Ken P.S. To all our surfing regulars check out www.surf-cult.co.uk and why not make a week of it - the festival looks awesome!

Hi, my name is Meirion Underhill I was in the Knights from 1978 to 1981. I am now living in Beverley, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
Hi my name is Meirion (Butch) and came to Porthcawl for a weekend and stayed for 2 years. What a place and what people, Ken and Pat became good friends it was just a shame the SPG or F troop as Ken called them wern't so friendly which finally drove me out of Porthcawl. I hope Fluke is still around and a shame I lost touch with Des (Nigel) and Tom (Mark) from Penrhiwceiber. Looking at the photos posted I remember many faces but the names escape me as the memory is not so good (must be all the VAT I drank). Eugene Mullins that put me up in North Cornelly where are you, Sarge, Mike and the gang from Pyle were just the best guys around (even if Sarge gave me a blackeye). Great music, great people, lots of women, lots of VAT and fantastic fun especially when the mushroom season started (thanks to my initiation by Graham Stretch and Scotty)

Hi, my name is Karen Monks I was in the Knights from 1976 to 1985. I am now living in Kusadasi,Turkey, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
I knew this book was on its way - didn't know it was now out.Stumbled across this site by accident. Congratulations Ken - I know it wasn't easy! I was a regular at the Knights for about 10 years, and used to love the place.. very fond memories, never any trouble (not that I ever saw)brilliant music, loads of characters. There will never be another place like it, it was a moment in time..Knight jukebox got me hooked on Patti Smith, Lynyrd Skynyrd to name but a few.... I live in Turkey now, and strangely enough, i think that this town is ready for a touch of that type of nostalgia, and boy, some of the characters living here would have fit in back then NO problem!!

Oh yeh, miller as well. The summers were great especially watching the non-biker leather jackets catching the bus down for the weekend. Living in Australia now so cant put my country as the UK or Wales which I would have loved doing lol.

Myself (Big Nick) and friend Nick Rowe (Little Nick), originally from Newton, were in Porthcawl from Jan to March 1975. We both bought Norton Cammando's from Waterton Cross Motors, and while waiting to get our driving permits (me, 6 ft. 6 in. on a Honda 250, the message about the examiner lurking in the shadows brings back memories!) spent most evenings at the Kniights. Ken, you may not remember us, but we eventually went off to Africa on the bikes (but that's another story). Great times, great bunch at the Knights, never came across another pub like it. Bet you all had a fantrastic time at the launch/reunion! Cheers, Big Nick

Son of Uncle Idris, conceived in the Ship, learnt all about life as a young pup helping out serving pies and pasties and bottling up with Wayne. We saw, smelt and heard it all..Dai Ship's fire, mushrooms in the back room, Krishna bus, the streaking days, lifeguards on cider, copulating bikers in the garage, winning Wales rugby,Leslie Baines' nude turn, holding Ken's watch, table football, great music, Bulmers no7...only today does it seem so brilliantly bizarre! Well done and thank you to the Evans' families. The book took me back and made me laugh and cry out loud in equal measure. Looking forward to Book 2 Ken: 'Pier People'.

Hi, my name is Phil George I was in the Knights from 1974 to 1985. I am now living in Kenfighill, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
Hi everyone, it looks as if the copies of Kens book are well on their way to selling out allready, just as fast as the tickets for the reunion party did and that copies of the book are also rapidly spreading to the 4 corners of the world.( PJ if you are reading this then yes your book is on it's way out to you in Florida! ) I dare say that the incredible response to the reunion party and the overwhelming demand for tickets has taken everyone by surprise not least yourself Ken along with the management of the Seabank. So Ken ,here is an idea, which I dare say you have probably already had for yourself anyways, how about a second book consisting mainly of photo's ? As the old saying goes a picture paints a thousand words, with that in mind there must be a few million words still floating about out there in the form of the many hundreds of different photos that we all have taken amoungst ourselves over the years of the Knights Arms Army. I am sure that there are many of us out here who would be happy to supply you with said photo's to be included within a second book. This is of course a purley mercenary idea on our part because it stands to reason that if there is a second book then true to form we have got to have another launch party havent we !!!!! Anyways Ken thanks for book no1 , reading it has brought back lot of really good memories, all the best to you an Pat.

I would sit on the stairs and wonder what was going on behind the closed door! Sunday's were spent in the pool room/family room eating crisps and sipping lemonade. I remember the Knights Arms-a great place to grow up.

Hi, my name is Ken I was in the Knights from 1971 to 1981. I am now living in Porthcawl, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
Knights Arms Reunion Ode to John John Long sadly died 11 years ago. Anyone that knew him laughed with him, never knowing what he would do next; we really miss the guy. According to his wishes,John was cremated and his ashes given to his Mother, Father and Sister to dispose of. Not knowing where John wanted his ashes scattered, his parents kept them for years, then Sister Jane had the answer. She knew that John like to sit in the shelter opposite the Seabank with the telegraph, occasionally glancing at the nude statue of a rather large lady bending over backwards. So early one morning John Longs ashes were scattered on the ground infront of the large lady bending over backwards. So as we enjoy ourselves at the Knights Arms Reunion Party, it’s nice to know that John is close by, whether he is reading his telegraph or admiring the large nude lady bending over backwards. I’ll leave it to your imagination! Myself, I’m sure he will be with us on the 1st September organising a spoon fight, or playing the piano in the nude. Wish he was here! Ken Evans

PART (2) Despite the air of chaos and anarchy in my posting all of us who were part of your memory know that it was a magical place at a magical time and as much as I would luv to see the knights reborn I doubt that those times could ever be the same - and that's why it was all so very very special : ) Hope the book sell by the bucketload and thanks for having the courage of your conviction in running the Knights as only you could when so many of the porthcawl hierarchy would have loved to have closed the 'troublesome eyesore' down. ps. BBC Keith, how come u look the same age NOW as you did in the pic section???? Was it the Dodo's?? ha ha ha

Hi, my name is Ian I was in the Knights from 1979 to 1985. I am now living in Brynmenyn, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
PART (1) The only place to go defacto!! before joining the legions I used to walk passed with my parents whilst on hols and watch the bikers fill the square with atmosphere. little did I know that shortly afterwards I would be glugging back natch and/or mushroom juice after bussing it down with my mates Phil/Helen/Twins etc etc, blasting out Freebird on the juke, 'chilling out' in the back yard and kipping under the deck chair tarps over coney!! Miv - you were indeed there dude!! 'Wicked and Roughhouse' (bettws boys) were major characters and were often the entertainment plus for some reason everyone was downing "dodo" pills???? ha ha ha......... Then up in the morning, shake down and do it all over again!!! Fantastic...... Ken, you once let us kip upatairs which was ne of my claim-to-fames as was actually seeing you wallop a complete jerk out in the front yard so hard that he went over the bonnet of a car and didn't even touch it!!! Then I went on to play there a zillion times in bands Most Wanted & Midnight Choir.

Steve Merridew (mers), started going to the knights when I was just about legal. Played there many times (Black Ice, Sex). Took my wife on our first date to the best pub ever (still together 25 years, poor woman). Best memory: called in after work, fined and asked to leave for wearing a tie! Still live in Porthcawl, can't make the reunion night (on-call) sorry.

Hi, my name is Kath Talbot (as was) I was in the Knights from 1980 to 1985. I am now living in Nr Perth, Scotland, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
WOW! Memories - far too many given the gallons of No.7 consumed there! Remember the Chartered Hurricaine gigs, biting the bums of pool players, Internationals, even mother going there & declaring "what's that funny smell"! Having at least 3 18th birthday bashes, countless teenage arguments, declarations of undying love, too much laughter & general craziness. Come back Ken, come back The Knights as it was! Can't make the reunion but hope it goes fab. Best of luck to all. xx

Hi, my name is Sue Howley I was in the Knights from 1976 to 1980. I am now living in Brixton, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
Hi, I was 14 going on 15 the first time I entered the Knights. It was fantastic. Really lively. A place to meet anyone and everyone.. Remained a favorite port of call up to the move across to the Pier. Memories are largely blurred or spangled. Funny that.. However, I do seem to recall taking that photo of Keith and Fluke in the Photos section. Anyone remember that International one year - Wales v Scotland was it? The one that saw the front bar erupt into mayhem with benches upended and crawling through people's legs to get out. Hope there's tickets left for the reunion as I'm planning to come back for it - be a blast - my how we will all have grown..!! Love to y'all esp. Ken and Pat x

Hi, my name is Pete Saunders I was in the Knights from 1973 to 1981. I am now living in Port Elizabeth.S.A, United Kingdom. Here are my memories.
Can anyone remember that trip to Ireland to watch the Rugby International we organised.A 4 day survival course if ever there was one,I don't think I ate anything solid for the whole duration. We stayed in the Central Hotel in Dublin, the place was never the same after we'd left,we did more damage that weekend than the Who did in 20 years of touring.Remember that Old Boy from Cardiff making his grand entrance at breakfast time in the Dining Room,"Good morning you miserable Bastards".The Hotel Porters asking us every morning "Did you have a Good Night last Night Lads" mean while we had wrecked the place. You could even get Guiness for Breakfast, did Steve Pearce ever pay those guys from cardiff back, for all that Chicken he nicked from the Hotel kitchen.By the way did Dirty Derek ever come Home afterwards,or is he still in Cork.I've got quite a few pictures of that trip, all in black and white,we all look like a bunch of escaped convicts and we were that weekend, as we had a free weekend pass from the Knights Arms.

I must have spent a fortune come to think of it! Had some great lock-ins too! 1976 Jubillee, yeah!!! Remember some pretty "way-out" times... I even did a few gigs there myself with the band "The End" I remember pouring a bottle of beer over my head whilst singing and getting an electric shock off the mic! Love you both still xx p.s. the refrains of the songs virginia plain, american pie, starman and man of the world will allways bring back that odour of natural dry.together with my friends duffy and mac we visited regulary(to regulary)in my old ford anglia and my mate "mac" in his even older, model t shaped car. we allways had a full car arriving (and half a carfull coming back)saturday night we slept quite often in phil benders caravan, out in the yard,or even the dogs kennel.!!friends (fly)dai and nobby from risca were there every w/end.on sunday mornings it was obligatory to clean up bar, play football down the caravan bullring then back to the knights for cider breakfast.met ken once in the pier since, told him it was our gang that sold him the authentic german swastica flag that was on the knights ceiling (for 6 pints of dry if i remember right)all the best everyone will try to attend launch.john.

Hi! my name is Lea Roberts, aka Bruce to some of you.. orininally from Southerndown, now in Bristol. I first started drinking in the Knights aged 15... the Natch had eaten away the formica on the bartop in the 'surf cave'.. I used to hitch down on a Friday night and sleep anywhere.. beach.. empty building by the car park.. or back to someone's place for a party.. up next morning.. cafe breakfast and back in the 'Arms for the duration! Found you all at Knebworth 1975, Pink Floyd.. so many different memories... and lots I didn't even remember at the time! Also made sure that my kid brother and the Southerndown Underground Surf posse went through the same rights of passage.. What a time.. what a place... will definately be there for the launch.. don't know if I can still down a pint of natch in one though!

I celebrated my 18th there in 1973 with one boyfriend in one bar and another in the other and I flitted from one to the other all night! I was barred when Ken realised it was my 18th and I'd been going there for nearly two years! We all have great memories of the place. Sorry I can't be at the reunion on 1 September but I'm hoping Rhian will go and take lots of pictures.

Hi, like most of the rest of you reading this I too have many, many happy memories of my time spent at The Knight Arms ,it was a real university of life where most of us grew up together and made a lot of good friends for life.Good music, good company and always a good welcome.Being a biker I will always remember a lot of the real characters that used to turn up at The Knights from all over the country and unfortunatly bikes being bikes the good friends that we lost forever along the way. Now for the real big question !! Ken, retirement is not an option ,you have had enough of a rest since 1985 so when are you going to open The Knights back up ! you sort the pub and we will give you the material for the second book.
